Lake Awoonga Recreation Area:

The main recreation area offers excellent facilities and is open to the public all year round. Framed by the rugged peaks of Mt Castletower National Park, Lake Awoonga is situated a short drive from Gladstone or Boyne Island/Tannum Sands and is only minutes from the Bruce Highway.

Things to do at the Lake Awoonga Recreation Area:

  • Fish for barramundi (and other fish) all year round
  • Go swimming with family or friends
  • Saunter along one of the landscaped walking trails
  • Explore the beauty of Lake Awoonga by boat
  • Enjoy a picnic or barbecue
  • Drop into Kalinda Cafe for lunch on the deck and enjoy the glorious views
  • Hire a houseboat or stay at the caravan park/camping grounds
  • Go sailing, canoeing or skiing
  • Photograph the wonderful wildlife or go bird watching (around 25% of Australia’s bird species can be found in the region)
  • Or just sit back, relax and take in the lovely landscapes and sensational scenery.

It should be noted that no permit is required for fishing at Lake Awoonga.

Barramundi

There is no closed season for barramundi at Lake Awoonga, although there are some limitations:

Open Season (1 Feb-31 Oct)

Closed Season (1 Nov-31 Jan)

Minimum size 58cm

Minimum size 58cm

Bag limit of 5 fish per person

Bag limit of 1 fish per person -

that fish can be over 120cm

Only one fish can be over 120cm

No special tagging of fish is required

CAUTION: Fluctuating water levels - submerged hazards exist

 

Other Stocked Fish

Mangrove Jack - minimum size is 35cm and there is no maximum size

Sea Mullet - minimum size is 30cm and there is no maximum size

Other Fish - DPI&F fishing regulations govern capture of other species

Camping at Lake Awoonga Recreation Area

At Lake Awoonga camping is permitted only at the Lake Awoonga Caravan Park (or on the other side of the lake at the Boynedale Bush Camp). To book a camp-site, cabin or an onsite van at the Lake Awoonga Caravan Park telephone (07) 4975 0155.

Barbecues and Campfires at Lake Awoonga Recreation Area

Sheltered picnic and BBQ areas are located throughout the Lake Awoonga Recreation Area. No fires are to be lit outside of designated fireplaces.

Disabled Access at Lake Awoonga Recreation Area

Lake Awoonga has specially designated parking bays, and selected picnic areas that are accessible to the disabled. Visitors with special needs are advised to contact the Rangers on 0419 661 482 prior to arrival so that they can reserve appropriate facilities. Disabled toilet access is available at Ironbark Gully, Riverstone Bay and Kalinda Cafe.

Walking Trails at Lake Awoonga Recreation Area

The two walking trails suit people of different fitness levels. Around 25% of Australia’s bird species can be found in the Lake Awoonga region, and a leisurely walk may provide you with a good viewing vantage.

Boynedale Bush Camp

The Boynedale Bush camp is near the town of Nagoorin in Central Queensland. No booking is required to camp at Boynedale, and sites are on a "first-come, first-served" basis.

Directions to the Boynedale Bush Camp

Turn onto Monto/Gladstone Road west of Calliope and drive for 26km – watch for signs for the site on the left and drive 1.9km in to the camping area.

Camping at the Boynedale Bush Camp

A basic facility, the bush camp is provided free to the public for camping for up to seven days at a time. The Gladstone Area Water Board has established toilet facilities, tables and chairs, shelters, fire-circles and rubbish bins.  Depending on changing water levels , the launching of small watercraft may be possible. There’s also a lookout nearby which provides great views of Lake Awoonga and Castletower National Park.

Please note that there is no electricity supply, and there is no potable water and campers must provide their own water. Note also that the roads are unsealed and may become slippery and boggy in wet weather.

As Lake Awoonga is a wildlife sanctuary, GAWB discourages visitors from bringing pets to the area. Small dogs may be allowed at the Boynedale Bush Camp, and must be kept strictly under control at all times.

Camping at Lake Awoonga is permitted only at the Boynedale Bush Camp or at the main Lake Awoonga Recreation Area.
