Local First Nations Artists!

Celebrating 50 years of operations, Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) is calling for local First Nations artists
living in or closely connected to the Gladstone region to create a distinct piece of public art and/or graphic
design to feature on the exterior wall of GAWB’s head office, located at 136 Goondoon Street in Gladstone.

Project objectives

 

The project aims to:

1. Centre First Nations participation in GAWB’s 50th Anniversary program
of events and contribute to the project’s ‘Our Water Story’ theme.
2. Involve the community to express ideas and storytelling through a
creative process.
3. Strengthen the sense of local pride in our region and bring energy and
colour to the GAWB office.
4. Create cultural tourism assets for our community and visitors to enjoy.

Project description


Location: GAWB Head Office, 136 Goondoon Street, Gladstone.
A large-scale mural on the southern external wall of GAWB’s head
office in Gladstone, located at 136 Goondoon Street. This could
also be an artwork in another medium (such as a large panel) that
can be installed on the wall.
The area to be painted is an exposed outdoor area measuring
approximately 11m x 4m.

Artist brief

 

GAWB’s 50th Anniversary theme ‘Our water story is your water story’
highlights the important role water has played in the growth of the
Gladstone region over the last 50 years and more.
The artwork will be visible to the public and will reflect the
essential and life-giving characteristics of water for all
people and the environment of the Gladstone region.
The artwork should tell a story about water in the
Gladstone region.
The final artwork must be delivered as a largescale
mural suitable for an outdoor environment
and be suitable to adapt to various applications.

Project dates

 

The project commencement
date is 26 June and the
project is required to be
completed by 7 July 2023.

• 15 May – 12pm: EOIs close
• 16 May: Panel assessment
• 22 May: Artist advised of
outcome
• 29 May – 26 June:
Successful artist(s) creates
artwork
• 26 June onwards:
Successful artist(s) paint full

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Identify as Aboriginal and/or
Torres Strait Islander
• Be a resident of the Gladstone
Region and/or be able to
demonstrate a significant
connection to the Gladstone
region (actively contributing to
the community)
• Be a permanent resident or
Australian citizen
• Must be over the age of 18

Community engagement

 

GAWB will require the selected artist to participate in interviews with
videos and photos to be shared via GAWB social media.

Materials and equipment


The artist is required to provide all art supplies and materials. GAWB will
provide all equipment required for any activities relating to working at
heights, traffic management and permits during the project.

What are we looking for?


The successful artist will meet the following criteria:

Artist Statement

the project and ability to connect with regional communities through visual storytelling.
The Artist should also have experience painting large murals.

Design

Draft design for the project or portfolio of designs that reflects the artist brief.

Availability

Artist availability to complete the project within the specified project dates.

Fees

Total price of quote, including design consultation, artist fees, travel costs.

Locality

The artist must be a resident of or have a significant connection to the Gladstone region. The artist must also have a local connection to one of the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng, Taribelang tribes of the Gladstone region.

*The artist may be required to work from heights to deliver this project.

What to submit?

All applications are to be submitted using the Artist Call Out Application
Form with supporting documents attached. All applications become the
property of Gladstone Area Water Board on submission.

Please include:

1. Completed artist application form.
2. A concept of your proposed design.
3. 2-3 images of your previous work, if available.

   auditors for the purposes of the
   evaluation of applications and
   decision-making purposes;
2. As required under the Right to
   Information Act 2009; and
3. As otherwise required by Law.
