Lake Awoonga is one of Central Queensland’s most popular freshwater destinations for boating, fishing, paddling, and swimming. Conditions on the lake can change quickly, and underwater hazards are not always visible. Staying alert and preparing before you visit helps keep you, your passengers, and other lake-users safe.
Water levels at Lake Awoonga fluctuate throughout the year due to rainfall, inflows, and dam operations. When water levels change, hazards may appear or move beneath the surface. These can include:
Boating and watercraft safety
Whether you are using a motorboat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, take time to check your equipment and plan your trip. Safe boating protects you and other people on the water.
Before launching:
- Inspect your watercraft and safety gear.
- Wear a properly fitted lifejacket.
- Carry the required safety equipment for your vessel type.
- Check fuel, battery, lights, and communication devices.
- Launch only from designated ramp areas.
On the water:
- Obey all speed limits and navigation rules.
- Keep clear of the dam wall, intake structures, and restricted zones.
- Slow down near swimmers, paddle craft, and fishing lines.
- Maintain a safe lookout in all directions.

- Be aware of the weather and lake conditions. Changing weather can significantly affect safety on the water.
Before heading out:
- Check the weather forecast and radar.

- Be cautious after heavy rain, when debris and low visibility are more common.
If conditions deteriorate while you are on the lake, return to shore as soon as it is safe to do so.
Lake Awoonga is widely recognised as a premier Barramundi fishing destination. Anglers and swimmers must stay alert and cautious.
For swimmers:
- Swim only in suitable, safe areas.
- Enter the water slowly and never dive.
- Stay well away from boating lanes and launching areas.
For fishers:
- Be aware of other visitors nearby when casting your line.
- Avoid casting near swimmers or paddle craft.
- Keep your footing secure on slippery edges or rocks.
- Follow Queensland fishing rules and size limits.
Look after the catchment.

- Avoid disturbing wildlife and vegetation.
- Stay out of restricted catchment protection zones.
