Gladstone’s first ever Empowering Women in Cricket program has officially launched, thanks to a new partnership between Glen Cricket Club and Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB).
Gladstone Area Water Board CEO Darren Barlow said the organisation is thrilled to support a program giving local women the chance to try a traditionally male dominated sport.
“We’re proud to be part of Empowering Women in Cricket, which not only encourages participation but also creates competitive opportunities and helps develop the technical skills of the 40 women who have signed up for the inaugural season,” Mr Barlow said.
“It’s fantastic to see these players — many of whom are picking up a bat and ball for the first time — taking to the field and playing cricket. This competition is testament to the dedication of the players, coaches, and supporters who have made it all possible.”
The partnership is part of GAWB’s new community investment initiative to sponsor two local sports teams each year – one in the summer and one in the winter.
Glen Cricket Club President, Bede Bouzaid, said the club was grateful for GAWB’s support.
“This sponsorship has enabled the club to purchase new equipment and uniforms for the teams, significantly easing the financial burden on the players,” Mr Bouzaid said.
“We’re passionate about cricket and committed to growing the sport in Central Queensland.
“We’re thankful to GAWB for helping bring Gladstone’s first women’s cricket competition to life,” he said.
The inaugural women’s cricket season runs for four weeks, with a new season in February 2025. Organisers are hopeful more teams will join in 2025.
Community groups and sports clubs are invited to apply for support from GAWB’s community investment program, which are available at Community investment – Gladstone Area Water Board
Community investment can be in-kind or a financial contribution for community-led initiatives or individual pursuits which meet eligibility requirements. GAWB also offers assets such as the GAWB hydration station, marquee or water coolers, for hire by community groups.
Recent community initiatives which have received GAWB support are the Boyne Valey 50 Trail Run, Capricornia Catchments River to Reef Family Day, Lake Awoonga Adventure Race, Martin Hanson Memorial Art Awards, Boyne Tannum HookUp, and the Hydrogen Grand Prix.
