Tammy makes sure the right people are in the right jobs

Behind the pipes and water reservoirs, there’s a team working collaboratively to make sure water is supplied reliably and safely to customers. Tammy Walz, GAWB HR Business Partner, is a key part of making sure the right people are in the job.

As part of National Water Week 2024, we asked Tammy about her role and her career in the water industry.

When you were little, what did you want to be?
When I was little, I dreamed of being an air hostess or a school teacher. However, when it came time to choose, I applied for the Airforce and went away for testing. After that, I changed my mind and applied for pre-entry into the Police Force but put that on hold when I finished high school and got a paying job.

Tell us about your professional development journey.
My professional development journey began when I commenced university studies in my early thirties, completing a Bachelor of Business with a focus on Human Resource Management. While university provided valuable theoretical knowledge and study skills, I quickly realised the real world isn’t taught in the classroom. It’s through practical experience that I’ve learned to apply what I studied and navigate the complexities of HR in a real-world setting.

Why did you choose a career in water?
I had only just finished my degree when the opportunity arose to work with GAWB, and the role aligned perfectly with my qualification and GAWB was a great place to commence my new journey.

How would you describe your job to an acquaintance at a barbecue?
I’d describe my job as helping both the people and the business work better together. I support managers and employees with things like hiring, training, and resolving issues, ensuring the workplace runs smoothly and everyone has what they need to succeed in a vital industry like water.

How do you help the water get from Awoonga Dam to Gladstone homes and local industry?
By supporting recruitment, training, and workforce development, I work with others to keep the teams running smoothly, so the water keeps flowing efficiently.

What’s the most interesting thing about your job?
The most interesting thing about my job is the variety — it’s never the same day twice. I get to work with different people across the business, helping solve problems, supporting development, and contributing to strategic decisions that impact the entire organisation.

Why do you choose to work in Gladstone?
I didn’t really choose Gladstone — Gladstone chose me. I was born here, and my children were born and raised here. At this stage, I haven’t left, and it’s my home.

Who or what inspires you professionally?
I’m inspired professionally by leaders who demonstrate emotional intelligence and prioritise compassion and understanding in their interactions. Their ability to connect with people on a personal level fosters a positive work environment and encourages collaboration. These leaders exemplify how empathy can drive meaningful change and create a culture where everyone feels valued and supported. This motivates me to adopt similar principles in my own approach, emphasising the importance of building strong relationships and nurturing a supportive workplace culture.

How do you maintain work/life balance?
Maintaining work/life balance is something I continually try to work on. While I enjoy my work, I also value my family and personal time away from the office. I make it a priority to spend quality time with my loved ones and cherish the company and laughter of friends, as these moments help recharge me and keep me grounded.

How has the workplace evolved over the past 10-20 years?
There is now greater emphasis on flexibility and remote work options. Technology has transformed communication and collaboration, making it easier for teams to work together across different locations. There’s also been a shift towards prioritising employee well-being and mental health, with organisations increasingly focusing on creating inclusive and supportive environments.

What is one thing you want Gladstone residents to know about GAWB?
I want Gladstone residents to know Gladstone Area Water Board is dedicated to delivering safe, reliable water to the community and local industry while actively planning for future growth and sustainability.

What makes you proud to work at GAWB?
I’m proud to work at GAWB because of our commitment to delivering essential services to the community and the emphasis on sustainability in water management. I also take pride in the professional working relationships I’ve built with my colleagues, knowing that I’ve played a part in the bigger picture. Contributing to a collaborative culture that values each person’s role enhances our collective impact, and it’s fulfilling to see how my efforts support our mission and benefit the community.

What advice would you give someone just starting their career in your field?
My advice for someone starting their career in HR is to prioritise building relationships. Strong connections with colleagues and stakeholders are essential in this field, as they enable effective communication and collaboration. As a HR professional, my role is to offer guidance and support, so taking the time to understand others’ perspectives and needs will greatly enhance your effectiveness. Additionally, stay open to continuous learning, seek mentorship, and embrace opportunities to grow your skills and knowledge in the ever-evolving landscape of human resources.

What’s your favourite location at Lake Awoonga?
I love the water’s edge at Lake Awoonga, where I love having a BBQ with family. It’s a perfect spot to relax, enjoy good food, and take in the beautiful surroundings. I also enjoy taking the stand-up paddle board out on the lake, making the most of the tranquil waters and the beautiful scenery.
