Winter weather no match for Lake Awoonga Scavenger Hunt explorers

Gladstone local Tony Muller has been crowned the first monthly winner of the 2025 Lake Awoonga Scavenger Hunt.

Tony was one of almost 100 people and families who went searching for Barry in July, successfully figuring out the clues to find the iconic blue Barra hidden at the Aquaculture Gladstone fish hatchery at lookout one, Lake Awoonga.

A first-time player, Tony has won a $500 gift card and GAWB prize pack for his efforts and goes in the draw for the major prize, worth $3,000.

“My wife and I are retired, and we said, ‘let’s go to Lake Awoonga and find Barry’,” Tony said.

“We haven’t been to Lake Awoonga for more than 10 years and were amazed by the first class, well maintained recreational facilities available for the community.

“The staff were polite and helpful, and the effort they put in to maintain the facilities is obvious.

“The whole experience was awesome, and I think we’ll be going to visit Lake Awoonga every month from now on,” he said.

Didn’t win? Don’t worry!

There are still three more chances to find Barry, with a monthly draw until the end of October.

How to join the hunt:

Find the monthly clue on GAWB’s social media channels or website, or via media partners 4CC and Gladstone News.

There’s a monthly $500 prize draw and a major $3,000 prize to be announced at the Lake Awoonga Adventure Race on Saturday 25 October.

That’s a total prize pool of $5,000 – just for having fun!

Once you’ve tracked down Barry, there’s still plenty to enjoy — relax with a picnic at the upgraded Riverston Bay recreation areas, cool off at the swimming pontoons, or swing by the Aquaculture Gladstone interpretive display just up the road.
