Run, ride and paddle your way to adventure race glory at Lake Awoonga

Local thrill seekers have less than one month left to register for Gladstone’s most daring event of the year, the Lake Awoonga Adventure Race, on Saturday 26 October.

Sponsored by Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) since 2019, the adventure race features three legs – mountain biking, trail running and kayaking, with different courses to suit all fitness levels.

GAWB Acting Chief Executive Officer Scott Wikman said the Lake Awoonga Adventure Race is a must do for anyone who loves to be active and enjoys the great outdoors.

“The Benaraby Progress Association works extremely hard to deliver the adventure race and 2024 is no exception,” Mr Wikman said.

“There’s nothing better than seeing our world class recreational facilities used for community-led events.

“Our goal is to provide high-quality, free recreational facilities and services that facilitate more community events and commercial opportunities, enable healthy lifestyles and, most importantly, celebrate the incredible Lake Awoonga catchment that’s right here on our doorstep.

“When you register for the Lake Awoonga Adventure race, you’re signing up for a whole day of family fun. Once you complete the race, stick around for the multi-prize draw and the announcement of the Lake Awoonga Scavenger Hunt major prize draw.

“Then, once the adventure race formalities wrap-up, head up to the Aquaculture Gladstone interpretive display and check out the rare White and Golden Barramundi.

“From there, kick back and enjoy a BBQ at Riverston Bay recreation area or make use of our new swimming pontoons. Quite frankly, there’s never been a better time to visit Lake Awoonga, and we can’t wait for this year’s Lake Awoonga Adventure Race,” Mr Wikman said.

Lake Awoonga Adventure Race Event Coordinator Melanie Achilles said the event is going from strength to strength.

“Community interest has been high, with some race categories already close to capacity, so get in quick to avoid disappointment,” Mrs Achilles said.

“Whether you’re a novice or experienced competitor, the Lake Awoonga Adventure Race is about having fun and enjoying the beautiful space around us.

“There’s something for everyone, from the Barramundi Bush Bash for our novice competitors through to the Goshawk Gauntlet for our competitive adventurers, and there’s also Taipan Trail for those looking to test their endurance.

“We’re grateful to Gladstone Area Water Board for their ongoing support since the very beginning. We are also thankful for the support of our other sponsors, stakeholders and volunteers, as well as the participants who train, compete and have a great time on the day.”

The sixth annual Lake Awoonga Adventure Race will be held on Saturday 26 October from 6am to 11am.

Registrations close on Wednesday 23 October 2024.

4CC will be holding an outside broadcast at the event, and GAWB will also be drawing the major prize winner of the highly successful Lake Awoonga Scavenger Hunt and handing over a gift voucher worth $3000 to the winner.
